“Hopes are the ropes to swing over each and every difficulty in life”
Most of us live with the help of these ‘hope’ whereas some become ‘hopeless’ and quit with their life. The cases of suicide in Nepal have been increasing rapidly for the past few years. But the question is: Is this the only way of handling problems in life?
Recent news about a boy, Mahendra Rai of 24 who took his own life after his sister suddenly went missing for some weeks, was the highlight of the media. His suicide note pointed the reluctance of police. Apparently very worried about his "missing" sister, his note had complained that the police and crime department didn’t showed interest in finding her. Due to the poor financial condition of his family and following the death of his mother, Mahendra had taken full responsibility of raising and educating his two siblings. Whereas the suicide case of Journalist Bharat Bhurtel is still a mystery. What could be the reason behind a wise and intellectual person who struggled and taught many to struggle, lose hope?
Data compiled by police showed that a staggering number of people commit suicide in Nepal, and the number is rising. According to police records, every day on average seven people committed suicide across the country during last fiscal year ended in mid-July. A total of 2,566 people committed suicide last fiscal year, up from 2,029 in the previous year. Similarly, suicide is now the leading cause of death among women in Nepal. The data revealed by the government shows that women of childbearing age more likely to die by their own hand than in childbirth. 21% of the suicides among women 15-49 were in girls under 18, which suggests youth as a major factor.
Poverty lies as the major cause whereas family problems and love relationships are other reasons behind suicide. Unable to afford to cure disease or have food at least once a day, the problem is the lack of economy. This reflects the ignorance of government to provide basic facilities to the citizens.
Frequently we hear about couples who are mostly teen’s, commit suicide when they don’t get the permission from their parents to tie a knot. In cases like these, both the families need to understand and should not push their children towards suicide. Parents can help their children live separately rather not losing them forever.
Reports mention that mental health problems, relationships, marriage and family problems which result to depression are the factors in suicides amongst women’s.
Problems are part of our life. The more we face them, the stronger we become and gain courage to live. Everyone faces problems but the answer is not a suicide. Problems are not difficult to solve at all; it is us who make them completed and don’t dare and solved them. Therefore, dare to face the problems and live life to the fullest. |
