Generation Gap

Nov. 16 , 2010 - The Kathmandu Post

A toddler first tastes the problem of the generation gap when his parents do not buy him the toy in the shop he desperately desired to play with. Similarly, a girl during her teenage years realises the generation gap between her and parents when she is not allowed to go to her friend’s party.  A young guy who finishes his graduation blames the generation gap when his parents force him to get married. And likewise, an old man is triggered with this problem when his children do not understand the importance of doing puja at home and ignore his desire to have a puja.

The generation gap is a trigger for all age groups. Every age group and every individual faces this problem as this does not have any boundary, any nation, any race or any distinction between the rich and poor. Although it may not always be termed the generation gap, we have all definitely encountered with this problem throughout our life.

The generation gap is a term which was popularised during the 1960’s in Western countries. It generally referred to the difference between the thoughts and wants of younger generation and their elders. Moreover, this reflected the contrast between the children and their parents. Although this problem existed since throughout the history of human civilisation, the term has been recently propagated since the 60’s. Rapid cultural changes, technological advancement and globalisation have enhanced and deeply rooted this issue. These rapid changes have altered the ideologies and thoughts of younger generations which happened to be against the social norms and values and against the elder generations.

As this mostly reflects the differences between young and old generations, teenagers are the major victims of this problem. While they are facing various other problems due to physical as well as mental development during adolescence, they tend to get more depressed and frustrated when one more problem of the generation gap is added to the top of the pile. Their maturing minds tend to divert towards ill practices as a consequence of their parents misunderstanding their desires. Despite trying to cope up with the situation, they get more confused and filled with various questions when their parents do not realise that their children are facing enormous obstacles in life. I have been through these situations and can see many victims in my surroundings too.

In spite of facing these problems, everyone has to move ahead. However, you always need to realise that you are not only the one to face these problems. Hence, you must boost up your confidence and solve these difficulties keeping the thought that you are a brave person. Running away from these problems is not a solution; rather, facing them confidently is a sign of a truly successful person.
